PostGIS 0.6.1 Released

Refractions Research has released version 0.6.1 of the PostGIS/PostgreSQL open-source spatial database today, along with a new site design for the PostGIS community web site.

"The latest release cleans up some of the loose ends in 0.6 and puts us in a good position to start work on coordinate reprojection, preliminary topology support and some other big items slated for 0.7.", said Paul Ramsey, the project leader.

Version 0.6 was released in early September, 2001, and included major new changes in support of the OpenGIS Simple Features for SQL Specification:

  • Spatial reference and geometry layer metadata tables.
  • Enforcement of spatial reference and feature type homogeneity in the database.
  • Additional spatial query operators.

PostGIS has been developed by Refractions Research Inc as a research project in spatial database technology. PostGIS is released under the GNU General Public License.

Version 0.7 is slated to include important enhancements:

  • Early support of topology operations ported from the JTS topology suite.
  • Preliminary support of feature coordinate transformation.
  • Exploratory work on the OpenGIS Web Feature Server, or emulation of the ArcIMS "Feature Service" data mode.
