SMART

SMART is a desktop Java application built to support law enforcement management of protected areas around the world. The application was built to be extensible, reusable and incredibly flexible. Purpose built plug-ins of SMART at this stage allow for GPS tracking and recording of information while in the field using mobile data collection devices. This data can then be queried and reported on using the very powerful tools provided in other data analysis plug-ins on the desktop.

SMART also has a Survey Collection plug-in that can be used for ecological records surveys, but could easily be used for any number of data surveys as all the data collection options are configurable and extensible.

The Conservation and Protected Area management application that we have built and continue to support is available freely from the SMART Partnership, a group of NGOs including The Wildlife Conservation Society, WWF, Franfurt Zoological Society and others; see their SMART website for more details: SMART Website

Since the SMART application and code is completely open source and free to use, Refractions would be happy to discuss any customizations or re-use of the SMART platform for your organizations needs, please contact us if you have any questions about how we could help build a software solution for you.
